Fox was seeking quiet when he came upon Vi.
He didnât notice at first, of course, and he jumped when she turned her head.
âRight,â she confirmed, nodding. âForgot?â
âI,â he began, then abandoned his efforts. âYouâre a cat,â he noted instead, catching the sheen from the chandelier as light slid languidly over the ebony pitch of her fur.
âPerceptive,â Vi agreed, idly eyeing her paw. âSort of happens when the sun goes down.â
âMind if I sit with you?â Fox asked, glancing over his shoulder. âIâm avoiding the demon.â
âAnd Brandt too, I imagine,â Vi said.
âThatâs the one I meant,â Fox replied, and Vi gave a strange, feline chuckle.
âRight,â she said again, staring back out over the lake.
Fox sighed quietly.
âThe ghost isnât here, is he?â Fox asked, glancing around, and Vi shook her head.
âYouâve never actually talked to a ghost, have you?â she prompted, and he shook his head. âSo youâre totally a fraud.â
âYes,â he said. âAlmost entirely, actually.â
âHuh,â Vi said. âI take it I donât have to pay you, then.â
âWell, who knows?â Fox asked, shrugging. âIf I manage to get the job done somehow, itâs still a service worth paying for, isnât it?â
âYou canât even see the ghost Iâm paying you to remove,â Vi reminded him.
âTrue,â Fox conceded. âI donât see him or much of anything, and yet Iâm apparently responsible for saving mankind anyway, arenât I?â
It came out a little more bitterly than he intended, and Vi saved him the trauma of a response. Instead she turned her head, her tail flicking slightly as she eyed a piece of lint that fell slowly through the air.
âSo,â she said. âYouâre a thief, then.â
âNo,â Fox corrected, shaking his head. âBrandtâs a thief. Itâs in his nature, down to the quick of it, down to his bonesâhe takes things,â he said bitterly. âHeâs clever enough to know how to make use of something that isnât his, and then he establishes dominion over it.â He swallowed firmly, then cleared the anguish from his throat. âIt comes naturally to him, but not to me.â
âSo what does that make you?â she prompted.
âI donât know.â He shrugged. âJust lazy, mostly.â
Her slitted cat-eyes slid to his.
âI donât believe that,â she said.
Fox sighed.
âIâm not really anything,â he told her.
He planned to stop there, but for whatever reasonâperhaps because talking to a cat was its own soothing sort of practiceâhe kept going.
âI always thought that I would be, you know?â he prompted, falling down awkwardly beside her; facing the lake, as she did, though it was a difficult thing to accomplish, sitting backwards on the stiff Victorian sofa. âSomething, I mean. Godson of Death,â he pronounced grandly, spreading his hand wide, as though to envision it on a marquee. âBeloved by a god, once,â he added under his breath, slowly letting his hand fall in defeat.
Vi let a few seconds pass, giving the statement its due melancholia.
âSo what happened?â she asked eventually, and Fox opened his mouth.
Then he closed it.
Opened it again.
Sighed.
âThe thing is,â he attempted, frowning slightly, âyou can see angels, you know.
